The second round of the National Cup series for Sporting Climbing was held in Wanaka in May. The National Cup series includes both lead climbing and bouldering competitions. Rotorua Lakes High School had six climbers competing and all performed well.

Year 12 student Tom Waldin placed second in Under-18 lead climbing, and first in the Under-18 bouldering, while Year 12 student Sam Mundy placed second in the Under-18 bouldering.

Bryanna Bell was placed third in the Under-18 bouldering and Holly Gardiner was placed third in the Under-16 bouldering. Darcy Faber just missed out on a medal with fourth place in both Under-16 lead climbing and Under-16 bouldering.

Tom and Sam have both been selected to represent New Zealand at the IFSC World Youth Championships in Guangzhou, China in November.
