UPDATE:
A Tauhara College teacher has confirmed the person hit by a car on Amohau St was a 13-year-old girl in Rotorua for Stage Challenge.
Tauhara College teacher Polly Withingon said the student's parents had been informed and were on their way from Taupo.
Other students at the scene have been seen embracing and hugging.
Ambulance staff are still treating the girl at the scene.
EARLIER:
A person has been hit by a car on Amohau St, opposite the Pak n Save carpark.
A reporter at the scene said the person was on the ground and police and ambulance were at the scene.
He said traffic at the scene was backed up, causing delays.
Bay of Plenty District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Mike Membery confirmed a person had been hit, but had no further information as they had just been alerted.
A witness said he saw a group of teenage girls run across the road and one was hit by a 4WD.
The reporter at the scene said there were school kids around who all looked in a state of shock.
