Eight people have been taken to hospital following a crash between a car and van at the intersection of State Highways 30 and 33.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 6.25pm. The city-bound lane was blocked for some time, with traffic diversions in place.
St John acting Lakes area territorial manager Leisa Tocknell said three patients were taken to hospital with moderate injuries and five were taken with minor injuries.
She said seven of the patients were from the van and one was from the car.
Fire northern communications shift manager Colin Underdown said one person had to be extricated from the van.
There has been a crash at the intersection of State Highway 30 and 33, involving two cars.
Rotorua Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner said police were currently putting up diversions and advised motorists to avoid the area.
A Rotorua Daily Post reporter at the scene said it looked like the crash was between a car and a van and was blocking the middle of the road.
She said both ambulance and fire crews were in attendance and that it looked like a number of people had been injured.
She said police were directing traffic around the crash.
