Seven people have been injured, two seriously, following a crash between two vehicles in Ngongotaha.
A St John ambulance spokesman said they were called to the scene about 4.31 this afternoon, with an ambulance arriving shortly afterwards at 4.51pm.
It appeared there were a total of eight occupants in the cars and seven of them had been injured, he said.
Two of them were in serious conditions and the others sustained moderate injuries, he said.
They were transported to Rotorua Hospital, some by road and others by a rescue helicopter, about 5.17pm.
He did not know how old the occupants were or whether there were children in the cars.

Earlier: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious car crash in Ngongotaha.
Northern fire communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay said three fire crews, police and ambulance plus a number of support vehicles were called to the scene of a crash on Ngongotaha Rd, near Kokiri St, about 4.33pm today.
She said one person was trapped inside one of the vehicles, and as far as she knew, three people had been injured. One person was in a serious condition.
There may have been more occupants also injured.
She said emergency services were waiting for a helicopter to arrive to transport one or more of the patients.
A Rotorua Daily Post reporter at the scene said detours were in place via Kokiri St.
Those driving through Ngongotaha should expect traffic delays, she said.
