Rotorua Rotary and Lakes Rotary - with the help of transtasman kayaker Scott Donaldson - have donated thousands of dollars to a worthy cause.
In a joint venture, the rotary clubs presented Asthma New Zealand with a cheque for $6000 at a dinner this week. The money came from the profits of asthma-sufferer Mr Donaldson's talk in Rotorua earlier this year - where he spoke about his journey that saw him come agonisingly close to completing the transtasman feat.
Asthma New Zealand executive director Linda Thompson said she was blown away by the generosity of the clubs.
"We get no funding from the Government so to be donated such a large sum of money that we can use any way we want is just amazing."
Ms Thompson said the money would go towards printing more information books to give to the public.
"We give these resources out for free but the cost of production is quite steep. To be able to print a fresh batch means we will be able to keep delivering our message and helping New Zealanders dealing with asthma."
Asthma New Zealand will also be giving information books to Rotorua schools on the causes of asthma, and how children can best manage their symptoms and keep themselves healthy.
Rotorua Rotary president Russell Dale said Asthma New Zealand was a fitting charity to donate the profits of Mr Donaldson's talk to.
"Scott himself has asthma and has made a point of telling people that it doesn't have to stop you from achieving your goals. We think Asthma New Zealand is a good cause and wanted to do our part to help out.
"Scott is so passionate about raising awareness for asthma and we thought it would be a fitting way to show Asthma New Zealand our appreciation for the work they do."
