She picked up the 2014 Apprentice of the Year award at the Westpac Rotorua Business Excellence Awards. Now Lucia Hutton tells us more about why she loves the industry and where she hopes it will take her.
Tell us a bit about your job?
I am a hairdressing apprentice at Pure Bliss Salon and Spa. My duties include cutting, colouring, and styling clients' hair to their desire, while giving them an enjoyable, relaxing experience.
How did you get into the industry and what attracted you to it?
I've always had an interest in the beauty and fashion industry so when I left high school I enrolled in a hairdressing course and have been hooked ever since.
What does it mean to be named apprentice of the year?
It's been great to be recognised for something I have worked so hard towards. It's made all the hard work and sacrifices worthwhile.
How important is it to serve an apprenticeship?
I feel very lucky to have been given this opportunity and think that an apprenticeship is a great way to learn and earn at the same time. The experience I have gained during this time is going to make me a more accomplished hairdresser in years to come.
What is the best part of your job?
Keeping up with the latest trends, being hands on and able to express my creativity, meeting new people and making them feel good about themselves.
What challenges are there?
Exceeding the clients' expectations, working to the best of my ability and continually upskill to evolve with the industry.
Where would you like to be in 10 years?
I would like to be a successful hairdresser in a position to offer an up and coming stylist the opportunities that I have had.
How do you think Rotorua's beauty industry compares to bigger cities?
Because Rotorua is the tourism capital of New Zealand it is important we are aware of the latest fashions and styles, maybe more so than some of the larger cities around New Zealand. The fact there are so many successful beauty-based businesses operating in Rotorua is testament to this.
If you were mayor for a day, what's one thing you would change about Rotorua and why?
I think Rotorua is a fantastic place to live and there's not a lot I would change. I would love to see Rotorua continue to prosper and offer opportunities to local people.
