Emergency services are attending a serious crash on State Highway 1 at Tirau.
A New Zealand Transport Agency spokeswoman said the road was closed and traffic was being diverted to State Highway 5.
She advised motorists to avoid the area, but if that route was essential, to expect delays.
It was unclear how many people and vehicles were involved in the crash or what injuries had been sustained.
Earlier today a man was injured when a car ran off a highway and crashed into a ditch near Ngapuke in the central North Island.
The accident happened about 3.15pm on State Highway 41.
Police Central Communications Inspector Dave Rose said two other people were in the car when the crash happened.
The man was initially thought to have serious injuries but ambulance staff later said he was moderately injured.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said the man was being taken to Taumarunui but a helicopter was likely to airlift him to another location for further treatment.
At 4pm police and the Fire Service were at the scene, between Taumarunui and Lake Taupo.
