The Rotorua Parents Centre has created a happy buzz at the maternity ward.
Nurses and new mums were presented with gifts and a morning tea was provided for midwives at the Rotorua Hospital on Friday as part of the parents centre's 40 gifts to the community in celebration of its 40 years in operation.
Past-president Jo McQueen-Watton said it was important to give back to organisations who were involved in baby and child care.
"We wanted to give specifically to the maternity ward and asked them what they would like, we gave them a wish list," she said.
Clocks for the birthing rooms and a birthing bath were favourites among the gifts. Clocks were removed from the birthing rooms in the 1990s when a push to promote baby-led feeding was at its height.
Childbirth education convenor Caraline Abbott said while baby-led breast feeding was still important, mothers still needed to know what the time was.
New mum Kayla Poharama was gifted with a hand-made quilt. She attended the Parents Centre's ante-natal classes and found them beneficial.
"They were really great. I didn't know anything about labour before I went to them."
She would also be keen to attend play groups provided by the centre with her newborn Kiara,
Clinical midwife manager Sue Finch said once the baby was born was when parents needed the most support.
"When they become a parent, they often need support then. The Parents Centre allows parents to support each other, it brings parents together. Most of them have all gone through the same experiences," she said.
Mrs Finch said the gifts and morning tea were uplifting for the staff.
Rotorua Parents Centre will also provide money for Plunket to train more car seat technicians as well as gifts for Women's Refuge and the Toy Library.
