If Neil Young was still searching for a heart of gold he could do no worse than seek out Rotorua's own precious nugget Hine Takao.
The mother of seven, and commercial cleaner, has been named as the Rotorua Daily Post Person of the Month for August.
Last month Hine took a young man home to her house after she found him sleeping rough outside her workplace in the inner city.
She fed him and gave him a bed to sleep on for the day.
He told Hine he had been thrown out of the house by his father and was on his way to Auckland to meet up with his mother.
Hine had not seen him since, nor received thanks for her kindness.
"I'm not too worried, it would be nice but I don't expect to be thanked," she said.
"It's the last thing you think of when you do things like this.
"He has my number and he knows where I live so he can always see me when he wants to."
Hine supported her family of seven - ranging from 27 to 7 years old, plus various nieces and nephews who sometimes stay - from the wages she received as a commercial cleaner.
She estimated that it cost around $200 a week to feed her family.
It is not always easy to budget but they managed, she said. She was used to cooking for large groups and supporting her whanau. "We usually have some food in the freezer for a stew, or we have a boil-up.
"I always cook something nutritious ... "
With the winter nearly over she is ready to get her vegetable garden under way.
She was brought up in a family of nine children in Ruatoki, in the eastern Bay of Plenty, before moving to Rotorua 20 years ago.
"There were more opportunities here then."
She got "quite a few" comments on her Facebook page for taking in the young man but she didn't agree with her being painted as a 'good Samaritan.'
"I don't go looking for young ones to feed, if I find them and the time is right then I will try and help them," she said.
"Rotorua has a problem with people sleeping rough, not many know it because you don't see it out in the open.
"It's not good when it is children because they think this is part of life to do this.
"It is easy for young people to go down this path."
