Owhata Primary School has had a night of celebrations, with pupils being recognised for their unwavering commitment to boxing and their education.
Earlier this month, all 36 pupils involved in the 'A Champion Made' programme graduated with more than 90 per cent attendance.
As well as the graduation assembly, new entrant to Year 3 pupils put on a production called Hinemoa and the Seven Whetu for their families and community to celebrate Matariki.
Owhata Primary School principal Bob Stiles said the junior pupils spent a month preparing for the production.
"It was a stunning production and the pupils did a great job at replicating and understanding the content."
A Champion Made is a boxing programme run by Rotovegas Gym head coach Aaron Warren for local schools.
Mr Warren said at first people got the wrong idea about the programme, thinking it was violent. "When you hear about mixing boxing and schooling together you don't normally think it's a good match, but it teaches the pupils so much about responsibility, discipline and confidence."
Pupils trained twice a week during the nine-week programme and were taught how to make the right choices in life, show respect for themselves and others, and combat low self-esteem.
The programme has been rolled out in five schools - Tokoroa Central School, Sunset Primary School, Kaingaroa Forest School, Riccarton Primary School and Owhata Primary School.
Matariki Mikaere-Rikihana, Riley Collet, and Torenzo Morehu were the recipients of the three big awards for determination, discipline and dedication.
