State Highway 1 is partially reopened after a truck crash this morning.
The road was closed between Taupo and Turangi from 10am to 2.35pm today. One lane is now open.
A B-train truck and trailer unit loaded with timber went off the road and down a bank at Bulli Point around 5.15am.
The driver was uninjured in the incident about 5km on the Taupo side of Hatepe.
Workers are attempting to recover the truck and delays are likely for some time, police said.
Traffic had been reduced to a single lane but there is now full closure and motorists are being diverted around the west side of Lake Taupo.
For northbound traffic (heading towards Taupo) this is via SH1, SH32 and SH 30.
For southbound traffic (heading towards Turangi) the detour is via Poihipi Road, SH32, SH41 onto SH1. Drivers are encouraged to allow additional travel time to their journey.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has apologised to motorists for the inconvenience and thanked them for their patience.
