A crash near Turangi has left two people injured this evening.
Two vehicles collided head on on State Highway 47 near Lake Rotoaira.
The male driver of an SUV involved in the rash was airlifted to Palmerston North hospital with chest injuries.
The Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter flew a Finnish woman in her mid-20s to Waikato Hospital with a suspected dislocated hip and leg fractures.
Helicopter staff said the woman passenger was trapped in the vehicle by her legs for approximately 90 minutes before she could be extracted by the Turangi fire brigade using the jaws of life.
SH47 over the Pihanga saddle was closed for some time while the emergency services tended to the scene.
No further details were available.
