The Rotorua SPCA has been a voice for animals in the district for decades.
The organisation received a Spirit of Rotorua Award in October to acknowledge its excellent work.
The SPCA has about 2000 animals come through its shelter on Old Taupo Rd every year, most of which are cats and dogs.
Rotorua SPCA centre development co-ordinator Debbie Van Den Broek said they received no funding from the Government.
"I think a lot of people think we are funded," she said. "But the animal shelter is a little, nice thing we have done for the community."
They also offer subsidised costs for owners to de-sex their cats and dogs.
She said they had been running the de-sexing programme since 2010 and had seen the number of animals coming through the shelter halve during that time.
The SPCA also deal with complaints of animal cruelty and neglect in the Rotorua district.
To support the Rotorua SPCA you can donate funds on their website www.rotoruaspca.co.nz or contact them on (07) 349 2955.
The SPCA Op Shop on Fairy Springs Rd helps fund the de-sexing programme run by the SPCA.
To adopt an animal visit the shelter between 10am to 4pm or check out the Rotorua SPCA website.
Each week we will be profiling winners of the Spirit of Rotorua Awards.
