Young Farmers Clubs are often synonymous with pubs and after hours carousing, but the Reporoa version of the club has turned that image on its head.
Being recognised for their contribution to Reporoa this year has been the icing on the cake for the club.
It's been an outstanding year, being named the country's Best Young Farmers Club and coming runner-up in the Sports and Leisure category of the Spirit of Rotorua Awards.
Club chairman Hamish Lee said they weren't sure but suspected the Reporoa Lions Club or Reporoa College could be behind their nomination.
"We just finished milking, we were hot and sweaty ... and we had just sat down. Then our names got called out.
"I was blown away; the club won $250 but the community recognition is the best part."
Vice-chairman Alistair Neville said it was nice to pick up an award outside the Young Farmers organisation.
"It is really icing on the cake.
"It's the first time that a Young Farmers Club has won an award outside the Young Farmers."
The club has come a long way since November 2011, its membership numbers swelling from eight members to 40.
This year the club has held several big events, including the Reporoa Raft Race and the Drought Shout - a community pick-me-up after the drought.
Over the past two years they have raised about $5000 for Reporoa organisations including the local kindergarten, St John, Playcentre and Health Reporoa.
Mr Lee said these services were all essential in a rural community.
"They are all organisations we would be buggered without, we really need them."
It means a lot to the club that Reporoa has actively realised their contribution to the community.
"The community is quite grateful for what we provide in the community," said Mr Lee.
