Rotorua police have named two people killed on the roads over the weekend.
On Friday night Peter Watene, 54, Waikite Valley, died when his car crashed on Broadlands Rd, Reporoa.
Road policing manager Senior Sergeant Brendon Keenan said Mr Watene knocked down a street light and a tree. He was the sole occupant and was thrown from his car after failing to take a moderate right-hand bend.
"Alcohol and no seatbelt are factors here," Mr Keenan said.
"He had been drinking beer at home before heading to Taupo, about seven quarts [six litres]. Open and unopened bottles were found in his car."
On Saturday morning Susan Glen, 55, of Wanganui, was killed when her Honda CRV and a truck and trailer unit collided on State Highway 30 near Hell's Gate.
Police said weather may have been a contributing factor. There was a localised hailstorm in the area at the time and police are speaking to witnesses about road conditions.
There had been an unrelated car crash in the area moments before.
About 4.20am Sunday a man in his 20s was struck by a car on Te Ngae Rd, just south of Rotorua Airport. He died at the scene. Mr Keenan said he had yet to be formally identified.
"It's disappointing that we hammer home these messages about alcohol, speed, seatbelts and driving to the conditions and time and time again we're seeing vehicle crashes as a result of these things," Mr Keenan said.
"We're warning people to drive to the conditions, wear a seatbelt, it can save your life."
He said it was tragic that Rotorua's road toll had leapt from four to seven in one weekend.
Mr Keenan urged people who see someone driving in a manner believed to be dangerous to pull over and call police on #555.
