Rotorua residents are being offered free dental care this week as part of a promotion for KidsCan.
The promotion will see 50 dentists, 15 hygienists, 100 support staff and more than 550 free dental appointments being offered all over the country, including at Lumino's Rotorua Dental Centre on Friday.
The inaugural Lumino Day this Saturday is the first initiative between KidsCan and dental provider Lumino The Dentists, with over $200,000 worth of free dental treatments to be offered to selected adult family members of children at participating KidsCan schools.
Lumino The Dentists is hoping to make a difference by matching up invited adult family members from selected KidsCan partner schools with participating Lumino practices, and providing basic dental treatment free of charge on Lumino Day.
At Lumino's Rotorua practice, staff will be getting in early and are volunteering their time to provide a day of free appointments on Friday.
Practice manager Kathy Longbottom said the opportunity to help our Rotorua community by offering a day of free dental treatment to those in need had been taken up enthusiastically by staff at Rotorua Dental Centre.
"We already support an orphanage in Nepal through Johannes our dentist, and we often see the evidence of oral neglect caused by poverty in our own region, so if we can do anything to help we will. Nobody who lives in New Zealand should suffer from poverty and KidsCan are offering us a chance to help and do something about it."
KidsCan chief executive Julie Chapman said dental treatment was often at the bottom of the list for households who were struggling to make ends meet.
"That's why Lumino Day is aimed at helping the parents and adult family members of our KidsCan kids. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to help families in our communities access high quality dental treatment, for free."
Lumino The Dentists marketing manager Kerry Dunphy said the best way Lumino could give back to communities was by providing free basic dental services to families most needing help.
