Mountainbikers and rural property owners around the Kinleith Forest area are being urged to keep an eye out for a blue Jeep Cherokee.
Yesterday marked one week since George Taiaroa, 67, was shot and killed while manning a stop-go sign on Tram Rd at 3.15pm on Tuesday, in the Kinleith Forest area.
As part of their investigations yesterday afternoon, police set up a number of checkpoints to identify other potential witnesses who regularly use local roads and could've travelled through the area at the same time last week. One of those road blocks was at the intersection of Tram and Tirohanga Rds.
Detective Inspector Tim Anderson said they had talked to Mr Taiaroa's family about his history and background but police were no closer to finding a motive for the killing. A team of more than 30 officers were involved in the investigation and were working around the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and were also "talking to a couple of people in Auckland".
Police had also spoken with the driver of a two-toned vehicle they had appealed for on Monday.
Mr Anderson said police were still to find the blue Jeep Cherokee they were looking for but Mr Anderson wanted mountainbikers and rural property owners in the area to keep an eye out for the vehicle.
He said it appeared the shooter was familiar with the local roads. Mr Anderson said the driver could have gone in any direction. "It [the vehicle] may still be hidden.
"It could still be in the forest ... it could be anywhere."
Mr Anderson said they were looking for a man and police believe he was the only one in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. He could not provide a description of the shooter.
Mr Anderson urged anyone who knew the shooter to come forward to and speak with police.
Any information on the case, including sightings of a blue 4WD vehicle on Tuesday, can be passed on to police by calling 0800 Kingswood (0800 546 479).
