Time to book in for those Book Month activities

By Cherie Taylor

Local author Alison Brown is hosting Rotorua's WriteUp 2013 campaign as part of March Book Month.

The campaign offers a programme of events to authors, keen readers and emerging writers in the region and is being kicked off with the Waiariki Institute of Technology Creative Writing Challenge. Ms Brown said there were many from Rotorua who would benefit from the month's activities.

"There's so much talent right here in Rotorua. There are so many published authors and aspiring writers and this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate them," she said. Entries for the Waiariki Creative Writing Challenge will be accepted until March 9. Entrants are required to submit a 500-word story on any topic in any style except poetry.

Judging will be at the QuickWrite Writer's Forum at the City Focus.

Out of town entries can be posted to Alison Brown, 61B Hilton Rd, Rotorua 3101 with the envelope marked with "Waiariki Challenge" to arrive no later than March 8.

The QuickWriter Writer's Forum offers aspiring writers the chance to try their hand at quick writing with the possibility of their piece being selected for publication in The Daily Post or social media.

Writers representing most genres including fiction, non-fiction, family history, writing for children, and speech writing will be on hand to talk to. A reporter from The Daily Post will also be present to discuss news writing.

Books 'N Bath will be held at QE Health on March 21 between 4.30pm and 7pm along with a guided tour of the refurbished facilities and the chance to soak in the famous Rachel Pool as well as mingling with historians and authors involved in recording the hospital's history.

To secure a spot call (07) 348 0189 ext 720 or email infoline@qehealth.co.nz.

Rotorua Library also has several activities for March Book Month aimed at children and adults including displays of Kiwi authors, their works, writing competitions and a panel event where the public can interact with established authors.
