Whakatane's been named the sunniest spot in the country for 2012.
That's according to preliminary figures from NIWA.
Senior Climate Scientist Georgina Griffiths says it's usually a race between the Bay of Plenty and Nelson for the nation's sun capital.
Whakatane recorded 2602 hours of sunshine, while Nelson clocked 2584 hours.
Ms Griffiths says Nelson was pipped at the post, due to easterly winds in the first five months of the year and then again in August.
Lake Tekapo came in at third place.
