It was a miracle no one died after an overloaded, speeding car fled from police and crashed on Te Ngae Rd, trapping two people.

Police said they were waiting for results from a blood test to confirm whether or not the 20-year-old driver of the car had been drinking alcohol before the Saturday morning crash.

Officer in charge of road policing Senior Sergeant Denton Grimes said the accident happened about 1am on Saturday. He said the driver had failed to stop for police and had crashed soon after, on the corner of Te Ngae and Alfred roads.

"No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver and one other occupant who were trapped received only minor injuries. Police are continuing their investigation and are also waiting the result of a blood test taken from the 20-year-old male driver to confirm whether alcohol was involved."

Mr Grimes said it was "disturbing" there had been six people inside the car at the time of the crash.

"Police believe it was a miracle no one died or received more serious injuries.

This is another example of a young person in control of a vehicle driving at speed ... putting their passengers and other road users' lives at risk."
