Musical struggling to sell tickets

By Gary Hamilton-Irvine

The Rotorua Musical Theatre is concerned about their up-coming show Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, which is struggling to sell tickets.

The musical theatre started preparation for the show about four months ago and are happy with the cast, band and vocalists.

However, with opening night on Thursday, the show has filled only one of 12 shows in the 96-person Casa Blanca Theatre.

Rotorua Musical Theatre costume designer Tiffany Murfitt said it was a shame because it looked like people might miss out on a great show.

"It's a great musical, it's a light show with fantastic music and good comedy.

"You can expect to see some really fast costume changes and our band includes a 13-year-old prodigy on guitar," she said.

"It's a nice atmosphere here as well. We have 12 tables which seat eight people each, so it is perfect for groups."

She said they felt the show was well worth the $32 entry and there was also an open bar at the theatre, with cheap prices.

This will be the musical theatre's third show of the year, closing on December 8.

Auditions for the musical theatre's first show of 2013, Chicago, will be held from November 24 to 27, with the show set to open in April. Mrs Murfitt said they were still inviting people to try out for auditions, especially in male roles where they had received few applicants.

If you are interested in auditioning as a dancer or singer in Chicago contact (07) 347 8658 or 027 445 5669.

The Rotorua Musical Theatre is also hosting a Christmas quiz night on Saturday, December 15 at the Casa Blanca Theatre, on Riri St. Entry is $5 all welcome, teams of eight are preferred.
