World-famous musical Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to town in September performed by Rotorua Boys' High School and Rotorua Girls' High School.
Origin Theatrical has granted special permission for Rotorua Boys' High School to stage the musical by the great Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Well-known director Robert Young will be in charge of the musical, with highly-acclaimed choreographer Madonna Hall, from the Gold Coast, flying to Rotorua to take auditions next week.
The musical will be held each night from September 14 to 22 at the Civic Theatre.
Rotorua Boys' High School arts captain Jayden Thomasen, 17, said the concert was originally going to be held next month.
"Normally it's closer but we have delayed our production to open it up for the kapa haka boys.
"They have really good voices. I've talked to a few guys and they're quite keen to audition."
He said this would be a big step up from the usual performances at Rotorua Boys' High.
"The director, Robert Young, is brilliant. He has already come out and held a bit of a practice with us."
Mr Young is currently directing Rotorua Musical Theatre's Miss Saigon.
He said he had directed Jesus Christ Superstar many times before but this was the first time he had worked with Boys' High.
"I'm looking forward to it."
He said it would be great for the kapa haka boys to showcase and develop their skills during the musical. Mr Young said the students were getting the best of the best, with the costumes being specially made in Christchurch.
"Our set design is made by the art department at Boys' High and they have come up with very interesting concepts."
Rotorua Boys' High School principal Chris Grinter said the musical was probably the biggest the school had hosted.
"This is a huge opportunity that I know our boys will welcome and embrace."
