New Zealand has done so much for Rotorua businessman Po Kin Ho, he thought he would do something in return.
He paid a whopping $21,000 for a vase signed by Prime Minister John Key at an auction in Auckland on Sunday, the proceeds of which are going to the people of Christchurch. He also paid another $3380 for two other items - a vase which had been signed by members of the Labour Party and a 2009 bottle of Hawkes Bay merlot signed by Mr Key.
The auction was held as part of a Chinese New Year function in Auckland which raised $200,000 for Christchurch earthquake victims.
Dr Ho, who is the owner of Rotorua-based company New Zealand Supreme Natural Foods, said it wouldn't have mattered what the items were or what they were worth, he just wanted to donate money to the victims of the Christchurch.
He said he and his 50 staff were upset about what had happened in Christchurch.
"It's hurt my heart, it's broken my heart."
Dr Ho moved from China to New Zealand 24 years ago and during that time New Zealand had given him great opportunities and he had received a lot of support from the Government.
"I have to give back for the country," Mr Ho said.
He wants to do more for Christchurch and the company's restaurant, New Zealand Supreme Gourmet House on Amohau St is joining forces with Rotorua MP Todd McClay to host a dinner and a charity auction next month.
Mr McClay said anyone wanting to attend or had something they wanted to donate for the auction can call his electorate office, phone (07) 348 5871.
