Being on a television show has redefined success for Rotorua's Carter family.
The family of four is due to appear on a new series called XVenture Family Challenge.
The show, which started yesterday involves 16 families completing team challenges, with the overall winner receiving $25,000.
Each week, four families compete in three challenges. Two families go through to the next round and two return home.
Mum Sarah Carter said the family applied because it sounded like an interesting concept.
Her daughters Ruby, 16, and Samantha, 14, have an interest in performing, speech and drama, so were also keen to go on the show.
As part of the selection process the Tikitere-based family had to create a video showcasing themselves.
"We got together and talked and laughed and talked about why we wanted to be on the show and what we could offer," Carter said.
"We had to bring something a wee bit different. You had to present yourself in a way that was original."
Carter said the family was challenged during filming.
"It challenged our family teamwork. You don't really get the opportunity to be put on the spot and work together as a family," she said.
"We're not allowed to say what the challenges were but they were a lot of fun ... they were emotional, physical and mental."
Carter said the family learned a lot during filming and were looking forward to February 25, when their episode aired.
"We had a great time together as a family. We realised success isn't always defined as being the winner. It was such a positive experience, it didn't matter where we placed," she said.
"We enjoyed ourselves and worked together and supported each other."
Carter wanted to encourage other families to apply for similar opportunities if they arose.
The show was filmed at accommodation provider the Eagles Nest, in the Bay of Islands. The series features four episodes with four families competing in each, followed by two semi-finals and a final.
