Rotorua people will get the chance to marvel at the region's rich history and culture at the upcoming Buried Village Open Weekend.
Entry to the iconic site, which was a Maori and European settlement before it was destroyed in the 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption, will be free tomorrow and Sunday.
As well as having the opportunity to see the excavated ruins of the village and recovered relics on display in the museum, the public will also be able to enjoy family friendly entertainment, activities and giveaways.
A tour for two passengers from Volcanic Air will be on offer, as well as a scenic cruise on Lake Tarawera for up to 10 people from Clearwater Cruises New Zealand. The weekend will also feature kapa haka performances, guest speakers, pumice carving and flax flower weaving demos.
Marketing co-ordinator Bronte Angell said the event was an opportunity to commemorate 128 years since the eruption, as well as giving visitors the chance to learn more about the area's rich history.
"The Buried Village tells the stories of the early settlers and Maori that were living here before the eruption, it shows the history and the culture of the area," she said.
"This weekend people can experience that, all for free."
She said she expected about 100 people to turn out each day, but hoped there would be more.
"Just come on down here and see what's on offer."
Headfirst Travel NZ will be providing transport between the Buried Village and i-Site for $19 return per person. Three buses will run throughout the day, one leaving the i-Site at 9.30am, another at 2pm and the last at 2.30pm.
