People will be able to enjoy one of Rotorua's iconic tourist attractions under the cover of darkness this summer.
The sweeping bends of Skyline Rotorua's scenic and intermediate luge tracks have been kitted out with $250,000 worth of multi-coloured LED lighting, illuminating the tracks for visitors making the most of the luge's new extended hours.
The luge tracks will open earlier and close later than in previous years, welcoming visitors to make their way down the scenic, intermediate or advanced track with most luge tracks open until 10pm.
Skyline Rotorua general manager Andrew Jensen said the extended hours were part of preparations for another busy summer season with an extra 40 staff employed due to the extended hours and general growth in the business.
"Summer offers some of the most beautiful mornings with clear views over the city and Lake Rotorua. An early start allows visitors to make the most of this," Jensen said.
Jensen said Skyline's new morning luge allowed early rising thrill seekers to beat the crowds which was perfect for locals and visitors alike looking for a fun way to start their day.
The popular twilight luge was underway with 4km of new LED lighting installed across the scenic and intermediate track.
"This will allow luging to continue into the evening – while also completely transforming the luge experience," Jensen said.
"Twilight luging has always been popular, especially with locals, as it's prime time to watch the sun go down and enjoy the stunning views of the city lights in the distance. We imagine the morning luge will gain the same popularity."
Blue, red and green LED lighting light up the scenic track while white lighting has been installed on the intermediate track.
Jensen said the coloured lights fitted the scenic track's style and theme, while the white lights suited the faster pace of the intermediate track.
"With guest's safety in mind, we have made the conscious decision not to light the advanced track at this point."
At the same time, work was about to finish on a new concrete terrace in front of the restaurant.
"This will allow guests to mingle and relax, enjoy the views and take some truly special photos of the stunning scenery that Rotorua has to offer.
"We're looking forward to seeing visitors making the most of summer, enjoying everything Skyline Rotorua has to offer – whether it's luging, one of many other activities or dining at Stratosfare Restaurant, there is something for everyone of all ages," Jensen said.
