After 18 months heading up Rotorua newspapers, Matthew Sherry is confident he's leaving the business in a strong position.
Mr Sherry, general manager of APN titles Rotorua Daily Post, Rotorua Weekender and several niche publications, has completed his contract and returns to Wairarapa at the end of the year.
He won't be lost to APN however as he will continue to work alongside the company on a number of special projects.
Mr Sherry said he had thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a big year for the Rotorua Daily Post, particularly the March conversion to a morning compact paper.
"I have absolutely loved doing what we're doing, especially seeing how the paper has really moved forward in a big way."
The newspaper and individual staff taking out national and international awards had also been a highlight, he said.
"At the end of the day it's a fantastic team and I don't say that lightly."
Mr Sherry said one of his main objectives had been for the Rotorua Daily Post to get more involved in the community. "We really took a front foot approach to enhance the paper's reputation and profitability."
The goal of building a stronger advertising base had also been achieved, he said.
"[Advertising manager] Janine Davy has done a wonderful job, she's well known to most advertisers in town, she will continue to be a great asset to the company."
Mr Sherry said he believed the newspaper would only go from strength to strength.
"The place is in great shape, that's going to continue."
New general manager David Mackenzie will take up his role in the new year.
"I am delighted to be joining the Rotorua Daily Post and working with a talented team of staff," Mr Mackenzie said.
