A year after the success of its Double Down burger, KFC has launched a chicken pie.
Restaurant Brands chief executive Russel Creedy, whose firm operates KFC, Starbucks and Pizza Hut, said the pie contained KFC's famous mashed potato and gravy and, of course, chicken.
"It's fantastic," Creedy said. "I've had a few already."
The pie went on the menu today and sells for $4.50. It was the first time KFC had offered a pie in New Zealand, Creedy said.
KFC in the US had put a pie on its menu in the past. The launch of the pie comes on the back of KFC's Double Down bunless chicken burger promotion, which was a marketing coup for the chain last year. Creedy said he did not expect the pie to be as much of a hit as the Double Down. The company plans to re-launch the bunless chicken burger later this year.
The Daily Post staff members tried out the pie for lunch today.
The pie is stuffed with chicken, potato and gravy, and the 11 secret herbs and spices.
One staff member said there wasn't enough filling.
"Looks great, nice pastry but a little lacking on filling in both taste and amount. Have eaten better at the local pie shop.
"I give it a 5 out of 10. It promised much but delivered little. It would have been a 6 out of 10 if it didn't cost $4.50."
Another staff member was impressed with the size of it but then realised it wasn't all it cracked up to be once she bit into it.
She said the pastry was nice and crisp but there was not much filling.
"The filling did taste nice though. Maybe it should be smaller to fit the filling?"
However, she was pretty impressed overall, giving it an overall ranking of 7 out of 10.
"It was nice but the BP Thai chicken curry pies are better."
Another said: "The pastry is too thick and there isn't enough filling. Doesn't taste too bad but I wouldn't buy one again."
Another agreed it tasted nice but they wouldn't buy one again either. They also said they would have liked the pie to taste more of the secret herbs and spices.
One wondered, now that KFC had ventured into burgers and pies, how far off a KFC pizza might be.
