Traffic into Wellington has slowed to a crawl this morning after a serious crash on State Highway 1 at Ngauranga Gorge.
The crash happened at about 11am near Newlands and involved a logging truck and a motorcyclist.
A police spokesman at 11.30am said the motorcyclist was about to be taken to hospital.
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman said the motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was being taken to Wellington Hospital with serious leg injuries.
A southbound section of the Ngauranga Gorge remains blocked while a scene examination takes place and the area is cleaned up.
The NZ Transport Agency described the crash as "serious". Diversions are in place and delays of 20 minutes are expected.
Ngauranga Gorge is the main entrance into Wellington from the Kapiti Coast.
