Two people died in single-vehicle crashes on rural roads today.
The first crash happened on the Te Anau-Mossburn highway in Southland this morning.
Police said it appeared a car rolled and hit a power pole shortly before 8.30am,
One person died, and another occupant was trapped for some time. The survivor was freed and treated by ambulance staff.
Diversions were set up. The road has since been reopened.
The second crash happened in Waikato this afternoon.
Police said one person died after the single-vehicle crash on Te Mawhai Rd, near Te Awamutu, about 12.12pm.
Senior Sergeant Damion Rangitutia said emergency services had put road closures in place at Te Mawhai Rd and State Highway 3 while the serious crash unit investigated.
It is not yet known when the roads will reopen.
Mr Rangitutia thanked motorists for their patience while the scene is processed and cleared.
