A woman walking on a pavement in Auckland this morning was hit by a possible drunk driver whose car veered off the road, police say.
The 36-year-old woman was hit while walking along Stadium Lane in Papatoetoe about 6.30am.
Police said a car veered off the road and onto the footpath.
"It is believed that there were two to three people in the car at the time but the reason for veering off the road at the victim is not known. It is possible that it was a drunk driver," Constable Corbin Elliott said.
Emergency services were alerted after a member of the public heard the woman scream.
She was taken to hospital and later discharged.
Anyone who saw the incident or saw a car, described as being small and grey, in the Papatoetoe area around 6.30am should contact police, Mr Elliott said.
CCTV footage from the area was being analysed, he said.
"The victim is very startled following the incident and we're looking to speak to the driver responsible for this as soon as possible," Mr Elliott said.
Anyone with information was asked to call Constable Elliott on 021 191 0206, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
