Salvors face a second day where no containers will be removed from the Rena as 3m swell bash the stricken vessel.

While swells prevented the use of the crane barge to remove containers, Maritime New Zealand said salvors were still able to work on the ship, installing rigging to prepare the further removal of containers, and continuing to skim residual oil of the wreck.

So far 166 containers have been removed from the wreck. Of those 160 are at Tauranga Port where they are being process by Braemar Howells. All but four have now been processed.

Crews are working on White Island and Motiti Island today to recover container debris on the islands, while clean up teams are using warm water to clean residual oil from the rocky shoreline of Leisure Island and Mount Maunganui. Clean up teams are also continuing to work at Papamoa and Maketu.

To date, a total of 962.6 tonnes of solid waste has been collected by oil spill response clean-up teams.
