So you didn't think debut runner No More Tears could win Saturday's $50,000 Hamilton Vets 2YO Stakes at Te Rapa.
Neither did trainer Stephen Marsh. Hence the $26 dividend.
"We rate this filly, but she was untried at this level. The Justice League, Stradivarius and Miss Wilson - they all have huge raps on them and we didn't really think she could beat all of them.
"If she'd run into third I would have been delighted." Instead, No More Tears produced a finish that suggested enormous potential. Unsurpassed looked certain to give Jason Bridgman the perfect farewell from his Te Akau contract when clear in front at the 100m.
No More Tears not only grabbed him, she powered past in the final couple of strides, displaying huge determination.
Clearly, the Darci Brahma filly will run beyond sprint distances, but there is no thought to keep her going for the 1400m of the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie.
"No, we'll tip her out now and bring her back as a 3-year-old," said Marsh. "If you keep her going to the Foal Stakes it means less time you can spell them and have them back for the spring."
No More Tears is raced by the Don't Cry Syndicate, one of Albert Bosma's Go Racing empire.
What a steeplechase record Carinya is compiling.
Five steeplechases now for four wins, which if you say is a record it won't be, but it must be close to one.
As a 5-year-old, she has a big future if increasing weight in the handicaps doesn't eventually impede her progress. There was a lot to admire about the way she knuckled down to her job in the closing 250m on Saturday.
Another Central Districts visitor Prologue looked just as good scoring in the second of the hurdles races, the first of which was won nicely by the Rogerson-trained Endor and ridden by visiting Victorian-based Richard Cully.
Overall, punters had a bad day at Te Rapa with horses like Singapore Girl getting home at $73.90, one of two winners ridden by Irish apprentice Brendan Hutton.
Zedpac ($31.60) and Aranmore at $16.40 helped wipe the smiles from punters. Most went for a get-out bet on the favourite Ambitious Unicorn in the last race, but the rot continued when the 3-year-old bled from both nostrils and was eased out of the race by Matt Cameron.
The race was won by the second of Brendan Hutton's winners, Trojan Warrior at $17.60.
