Our 'new' flag minus the Union Jack
The Prime Minister has suggested taking the Union Jack out of the flag as pictured here.
Asked whether New Zealand should become a republic or consider changing its flag, Helen Clark said the two issues could be kept separate.

Why cannot this country be proud of it's flag, Australia took the flag for themselves and are very proud of 'their' flag, suggest to them to change their flag and see what reaction you get. The Canadian flag was changed to appease the Quebec separatisits who wanted 'and still do' take Quebec out of the Canadian Union of provences.Jack tar.09:02AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007
Ms Clark's ambition is to make NZ a republic before she looses power at the next election, well she has to ask the people first and I don't think this will happen. Keep the flag as it is and be proud of it. -
I may be unique, but keeping the flag is much more important to me than keeping the Queen.Graeme.09:02AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007
I think it looks incredible - and it brightens my day each time I see one. Let's keep the flag, and the Union Jack in the first quarter (Hawaii kept theirs, and no-one argues they're somehow still beholden to Britain). -
I like our flag as it is. The Union Jack is part of New Zealands history and so it should stay. The Union Jack also features on flags such as Australia and Fiji and shows our common history with Great Britian. Leave the flag as it is. Trust that meddling Helen knows best to try to impose her views on New ZealandersPost09:03AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007

I think taking the Union Jack off the flag is a great idea! We are part of the Asia Pacific region, not England, and we should be looking to our neighborus instead. There's no practical benefit to New Zealand in continuing to think we have ties to that place, and getting rid of the Union Jack might make people wake up and realise this. Time to move forward into the 21st Century folks!Mike.09:03AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007

Yes, remove the Union Jack and just leave the Southern Cross stars.Hooky.09:03AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007

Leave the flag alone! The Prime Minister said yesterday that the constitutional arrangements with the Head of State wouldn't change for a long time. I think she said, 'if it ain't broke, why fix it'. Our flag isn't broke either. I'm a fifth generation New Zealand with Scottish roots. Unlike so many of my pakeha friends, I'm proud of who I am and where my ancestors came from. Maybe we could all learn something from Maori who honour their ancestors instead of trying to say our shared history is irrelevant.Leaveitalone.09:03AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007

I would of thought that the prime minister would have had more pressing matters to worry about than the NZ flag. But obviously not! We pay her to much money for doing very little for our country that really matters.Post09:04AM Thursday, 27 Sep 2007
