Stunning images of human nature, animal life and the world around us have been revealed in this year's annual coveted World Press Photo awards.
The competition has been running for 59 years and selects the most striking photos in 10 categories.
The Photo of the Year, by American John Stanmeyer, shows African migrants holding up their cellphones while trying to get a signal. It appeared in National Geographic.

photographer Tyler Hicks won second prize in the spot news category for his image of a woman and two children sprawled on the ground after gunmen opened fire in a mall in Nairobi last September. The trio were unharmed.
The photos will be exhibited in 100 cities worldwide, including Wellington, between this April and March next year.
