A fiery explosion proved to be an exciting lesson for film students at Unitec.

Students from the polytech's Department of Performing and Screen Arts got to see first hand a car explosion, set up for them to capture on film.

An AK47 machine gun was also used to pummel the vehicle with bullets moments before it went up in smoke.

Co-ordinator and Art Direction lecturer Brent Hargreaves, who has worked in television for a number of years, said the demonstration would help students better understand how such things were done within film.

"This kind of event - while not every-day in television, drama or film - is, in many kinds of productions, commonplace. So the ability to hit the ground running and having an awareness of the protocols, safety as well as the timelines involved, is important."
