A high to the southeast of the country extends a ridge across central New Zealand directing showery easterlies to the upper North Island and strong northerlies to the lower South Island. A complex trough moves onto the lower South Island today, then spreads north towards the North Island on Thursday and becomes slow-moving.

Tuesday: Easterly 15 knots, tending northeast 15 knots this morning, and rising to 20 knots for a time this afternoon. Sea becoming moderate for a time in the afternoon. Fine, with high cloud at times.
Outlook until midnight Friday: Wednesday: Northeast 15 knots, changing southwest 15 knots in the afternoon rising to 25 knots in the evening. Rain developing. Thursday: Southwest 25 knots, easing to 15 knots in the evening. Rain, possibly heavy, easing to showers later. Friday: Becoming variable 10 knots. A few showers.
