A Kaitaia man was killed when the car in which he was a passenger hit a horse on a road west of Kaitaia in Northland around 12.40 this morning.
Police said the horse, which was loose on the road, was thrown through the windscreen fatally injuring the 35-year-old manager.
The dead man's name would not be released until his relatives had been told.
In another fatal accident in Northland overnight, Jeremy Phillip Doouss, aged 21, from Dargaville, died when his light truck crashed off Arapohue Road, Dargaville, into a bush reserve about 12.10 am.
A 16-year-old passenger was not hurt.
