Labour president Mike Williams last night let out the worst-kept secret in the party - that Father of the House Jonathan Hunt is about to pack his bags and vacate his job as Speaker.

Prime Minister Helen Clark will officially announce his departure to become High Commissioner in London when she announces her reshuffle before Christmas.

But Mr Williams jumped the gun at the party conference opening.

"A special tribute must go to Jonathan Hunt, whose wine auctions have raised hundreds and thousands of dollars for party funds. You will be sorely missed."
