One of two escaped prisoners who broke out of Tongariro's Rangipo Prison on Wednesday has been recaptured by Turangi police.
Lexington John Lewis, 35 and 22-year-old inmate Anthony Christopher White, both ranked low to medium security prisoners, broke out of the prison on Wednesday night.
Lewis had been taken into custody this evening but White was still on the run, National Radio reported tonight.
Police were following up an unconfirmed sighting of White and have advised the public not to approach him.
Rangipo Prison site manager Jack Harrison said full details of how the men escaped were not yet available but prison breaks were "uncommon".
"Clearly the department is extremely concerned at this breach of security and we will be immediately commencing an internal investigation into the incident," he said.
Turangi police were unable to be contacted tonight.
