The Chatham Islands is to get a new sole-charge police officer next week.
The permanent position has been empty for a year, meaning relieving officers from Wellington have had to take turns policing the remote islands.
Senior Constable Chris Barclay will start as the permanent officer from next week, said Wellington area commander Inspector Marty Grenfell.
He said Mr Barclay was an experienced rural policeman, having spent 14 of his 16 years in the police force in sole charge or country stations.
