Vital safety works on a dangerous Northland highway are being held up by a land-purchase dispute.
Whangarei district councillor Phil Halse and Transit New Zealand are at odds over the sale price of almost 7000sq m of Mr Halse's land to build two passing lanes on State Highway 1, south of Whangarei.
Seven passing lanes are scheduled for the highway, which has one of the country's worst crash rates.
