A serial sex offender has been sentenced to preventive detention for forcing two young women into prostitution while he was on parole for a string of serious crimes committed 10 years ago.
Chaz Antionio Duvelle had pleaded guilty in March to assaulting a female and living off her earnings from prostitution. He was also found guilty by a jury of having sex with a girl under the age of 16 and living off the money she earned from prostitution.
In 1993, Duvelle, who at the time was known as Anthony Robert Tubou, was jailed for 11 years and seven months for a number of sex offences.
One involved spiking the drink of an 18-year-old stripper and taking obscene photographs of her as he sexually violated and indecently assaulted her.
Duvelle, 46, of Blockhouse Bay, forced a 20-year-old woman to work in a massage parlour so that he could get money to do up his car. He threatened to kill the woman's mother and dog.
Duvelle then moved on to a 14-year-old he met on a chatline.
When she was 15, Duvelle had her working in a massage parlour.
Justice Robert Fisher said in the High Court at Auckland that Duvelle had corrupted two young women by introducing them to prostitution. In one case it was by using threats and in the other by emotionally exploiting an extremely young woman.
