A man drowned yesterday after the ground gave way under his trail bike, plunging him into the Waimakariri River.
He was Jeremy Michael Graham, 21, of Christchurch.
Police southern communications Sergeant Jeff Meldau said Mr Graham and another man were riding along the riverbank when both fell into the river, near Cust, 17km west of Rangiora.
Mr Meldau said it was likely they fell as ground under the bikes gave way due to recent heavy rain.
The companion was able to clamber ashore and went for help. Police were called just before midday approximately 30 minutes after the accident.
A boat and helicopter search was started and Mr Graham's body was found about an hour later.
No other details were available.
