The eldest in a gang of five youths who forced two teenagers to perform sexual acts was sentenced to two years' jail when she appeared in the High Court at Rotorua yesterday. Paula Quinlyn Ahomiro, 18, from Te Puke, last month changed her not guilty pleas on eight charges at the completion of the crown case in a jury trial.
Ahomiro instead pleaded guilty to one charge of assault and two charges of kidnapping.
She was discharged on the other five charges, two of aggravated robbery, two of attempted sexual violation and one of rape.
Justice tony Randerson said it was a sad day when two innocent young people could be set upon, humiliated and forced to perform sexual indignities by other members of society.
Crown prosecutor Greg Hollister-Jones said Ahomiro had been part of an incident in Te Puke on November 11 last year.
Two 13-year-olds were set upon by the 14-year-old female ring-leader and an 11-year-old boy.
Ahomiro was not present when, under knife-point, the two victims were robbed of money and jewellery. But she assisted in forcing them into a room under the scoreboard at a park.
There the victims were forced to remove their clothing, lie on top of each other and made to simulate sex.
Ahomiro's counsel, Tony Balme, questioned the probation officer's interview, saying the officer was not trained for the psychological issues involved.
But Justice Randerson said a common theme ran through the report, showing Ahomiro's apparent lack of remorse, which did not augur well for her rehabilitation.
