Three new day surgery theatres for Christchurch Hospital are included in plans for the city's new $78.9m women's hospital development.
Canterbury District Health Board members were provided with an overview of the project today at their monthly meeting.
Plans to build the new hospital, an additional wing of Christchurch Hospital, were announced earlier this year.
The development would replace the existing aging Christchurch Women's Hospital on Colombo St.
The new day surgery theatres, and shared theatre support facilities, would help Christchurch Hospital cope with growing demand for elective surgery.
The new women's hospital would also overcome design and building issues affecting the current outdated Colombo St facility.
The new building, to be attached to the Parkside West wing of Christchurch Hospital had been designed with input from clinical staff.
The five storey wing had been designed by a group of Christchurch and New Zealand based consultants and would be "sympathetic' to adjacent buildings.
Planning for the hospital development will continue for the next 12 months, with building - if approved by the Government - to begin in the next financial year.
