A South Auckland man has been jailed for 10 years for the abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl on her way to school.
Abdul Shaheed, a 34-year-old car seller of Mangere East, was found guilty by a jury in the High Court at Auckland of snatching the girl from a main street near her school in October 1998 and driving her a short distance to his home where he raped her.
Because of irregularities in taking a blood sample from Shaheed, the jury was not told that he was 100 billion times more likely to be the rapist than anyone else.
Shaheed had convictions for accosting two schoolgirls, offering them money for sex.
In handing down the sentence, Justice Colin Nicholson agreed with the Crown prosecutor, Philip Hamlin that it was a "predatory and brazen" attack.
Shaheed's lawyer, Christopher Harder, said his client continued to deny the offending.
In mitigation he said that there was no additional violence, and no weapon was used.
