Six Napier high school students, convicted of sexual violation with a broom handle on another student, were jailed in the High Court at Napier today to terms ranging from 2 to 2-1/2 years.
They were Taradale High School students Daniel Martin Cutbill, 18, Rewi Matiu John Gemmell, 17, Kent Russell Burns, 17, Mark Peter Hagen, 17, Gabriel Williams, 18, and Anthony Richard Lloyd, 18.
Hagen, Lloyd and Gemmell were each sentenced to 2-1/2 years, Williams and Cutbill to 2 years 3 months, and Burns to 2 years.
Another teen, Andrew James Castles, 18, was previously sentenced to 2-1/2 years jail, after pleading guilty.
An appeal by the Crown to have his sentence increased was dismissed by the Court of Appeal yesterday.
The six sentenced today were convicted after a two-week trial last month.
The court was told how the seven youths used a broom handle to sexually violate the 17-year-old victim.
The group held the victim down and inserted the broomstick, smeared with Vicks Vapo Rub, into his anus.
The victim suffered tears to his anus and bruises and grazes to his body where he had been held down.
