Police investigating the murder of Jason Johnson have called in the Criminal Profiling Unit in a bid to form a profile of his killer or killers.
The unit, which is based in Auckland, looked at factors such as the location of the murder and items found at the scene in building the profile, officer in charge of the case, Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Wright-St Clair, said.
"We are still in the early stages an inquiry of this nature. This is when the hard grafting and attention to detail by detectives will hopefully lead to a breakthrough," he said.
He hoped the unit would release a profile within the next few days.
Mr Johnson's badly beaten body was found in Lake Whakamaru in South Waikato almost two weeks ago after police were called by a passerby, who found pools of blood in a nearby car park.
Meanwhile, police have not heard any more information about a car which they believe may be linked to the murder.
A witness told police he saw Mr Johnson looking into a four-door saloon similar to a Nissan Skyline the night before he was found dead.
Items found at the scene were being sent away for testing. However their significance to the murder would probably not be known for about two weeks, Mr Wright-St Clair said.
Police had also yet to determine whether a weapon was used in the murder.
Police were still seeking help from the public to find out how Mr Johnson travelled from Taupo and ended up in the Dunham Creek Reserve on State Highway 30.
