A high-ranking Auckland police officer has been charged with drink-driving.
The officer was stopped at a checkpoint on Thursday night and allegedly found to be over the limit.
He has been stood down and is to appear in court on January 11.
A spokesman at the office of the commissioner refused to name the officer, or his rank or district, but confirmed it was a senior officer who was believed to be off-duty.
The spokesman also refused to say what alcohol level the officer recorded.
The Herald understands the officer was stopped in Auckland City.
